Curcuma longa (of the Zingiberaceae family) is a commonly used spice throughout the world, found broadly throughout the Indian subcontinent. C. longa contains multiple active components that exhibit anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-ischemic, and antineoplastic properties. Curcumin is a yellowish crystalline, odourless powder (melting point 184-186°C), poorly soluble in water, petroleum ether and benzene; soluble in ethyl alcohol, glacial acetic acid and in propylene glycol; very soluble in acetone and ethyl ether Curcumin is a beta-diketone that is methane in which two of the hydrogens are substituted by feruloyl groups. A natural dyestuff found in the root of Curcuma longa. It has a role as a metabolite, an anti-inflammatory agent, an antineoplastic agent, a hepatoprotective agent, a flavouring agent, a biological pigment, a nutraceutical, an antifungal agent, a dye, a lipoxygenase inhibitor, a ligand, a radical scavenger, a contraceptive drug.
