ASHWAGANDHA

Withania somnifera, commonly known as Ashwagandha or winter cherry, is an evergreen shrub in the nightshade or solanaceae family that grows in India. Ashwagandha is perhaps best known for its ability to reduce stress. Withaferin A is a withanolide that has hydroxy groups replaced at positions 4 and 27 to form the 5, 6:22, 26-diepoxyergosta-2, 24-diene-1, 26-dione (the 4beta, 5beta, 6beta, 22R stereoisomer). It was isolated from Physalis longifolia and has cytotoxic properties. It functions as an apoptosis inducer and an anti-cancer agent. It is a 4-hydroxy steroid, a primary alcohol, an epoxy steroid, an enone, an ergostanoid, a secondary alcohol, a withanolide, and a 27-hydroxy steroid. it is believed to be useful as a medicinal herb in Ayurveda and is sold as a dietary supplement in many countries, there is insufficient scientific evidence to show that it is safe or effective in treating any disease
